A backyard ultra in the Texas Hill Country. Every hour you run 4 miles. Miss a loop and you're out. Last one standing wins.
What Is a Backyard Ultra?
A backyard ultra is the purest form of endurance racing. Every hour, on the hour, runners must complete a 4-mile loop. If you don't finish the loop before the next hour starts — you're out.
There is no set distance. There is no finish line. The race only ends when one runner remains. That runner — the Last Person Standing — is the only official finisher. Everyone else receives a DNF.
The distance doesn't beat you. The decision to stop does.
It's not about speed. It's about managing your body, your mind, and your will to keep going when every part of you wants to quit — knowing that the person next to you is fighting the same battle.
The Format
Every hour, on the hour, a bell signals the start of a new loop. All remaining runners must be at the start line and begin the 4-mile loop.
You have 60 minutes to complete the loop and return to the yard. Any remaining time is yours — rest, eat, recover. Then the bell rings again.
If you fail to complete a loop in time or don't start the next loop — you're out. The last runner to complete a loop that no one else completes is the Last Person Standing.
The Rules
Longhorn LMS follows standard backyard ultra rules. Simple format. No gimmicks.
Loops begin every hour, on the hour. You must be at the starting corral (the yard) when the bell rings.
Each loop is 4 miles with approximately 200 feet of climbing and descent. The elevation replaces the standard flat 4.167-mile distance.
You have 60 minutes to complete each loop. Fail to return to the yard before the next bell and you're out.
Only the Last Person Standing is an official finisher. All other runners receive a DNF — regardless of how many loops they completed.
Pacers are not permitted at any point during the race. You run alone.
Crew is allowed at the yard (start/finish) only. No crew access on the course.

Why Longhorn LMS
A backyard ultra strips away everything — pace strategy, course knowledge, elevation planning. All that's left is the decision to keep going or to stop. Longhorn Last Person Standing brings that raw format to the Texas Hill Country.
